Why Strength Training Looks Different for Everyone

Walk into our gym during a small group class and you’ll notice something interesting.

One person might be squatting with a barbell.

Another is using dumbbells.

Someone else is doing a box squat.

At first glance, it might look like everyone is doing something different.

In reality, everyone is working toward the same goal.

That’s one of the biggest misconceptions about strength training. Many people assume there’s one “correct” exercise for everyone. The truth is, there are often several ways to accomplish the same objective.

Let’s say today’s workout calls for a squat.

For someone with years of lifting experience, that may mean a heavy barbell back squat.

For someone recovering from an injury, it might be a goblet squat.

For another person, a box squat is the best choice because it helps them build confidence and improve movement quality.

Each variation trains the same movement pattern. The exercise changes, but the purpose stays the same.

That’s where coaching matters.

A good coach isn’t just handing out different exercises. They’re looking at how you move, considering your goals, your experience, your mobility, and your comfort level before deciding what’s most appropriate.

The goal isn’t to make every person perform the exact same exercise.

The goal is to help every person make progress.

This is one of the reasons our small group training works so well.

Everyone follows the same program, which creates structure and keeps the class moving together. At the same time, our coaches make modifications when needed so each member can train safely and effectively.

Our personal training takes that customization even further.

Every workout is built specifically around the individual. Whether you’re working toward your first push-up, preparing for a powerlifting meet, improving bone density, or simply wanting to feel stronger in everyday life, your program is designed around your goals.

Strength training isn’t about forcing everyone into the same mold.

It’s about meeting people where they are today and helping them become stronger over time.

That’s how lasting progress is made.
