Fill out the form to get started
If you’ve never worked with a personal trainer before, it can be hard to know what to expect.
Some people picture someone standing nearby counting reps. Others think every workout is supposed to leave them exhausted.
In reality, good coaching looks very different.
A great coach isn’t there to simply lead you through a workout. They’re there to help you move better, train smarter, and continue making progress long after the excitement of getting started wears off.
A Coach Should Teach, Not Just Instruct
Anyone can tell you to squat, press, or deadlift.
A coach explains how to perform those movements well and, just as importantly, why they matter.
Learning proper technique builds confidence. It also creates a foundation that allows you to continue getting stronger while reducing unnecessary stress on your body.
The goal isn’t to memorize exercises. It’s to understand how to train effectively.
Good Coaching Looks Different for Everyone
No two people walk into the gym with the same background.
Some have never touched a barbell.
Others have been training for years but want more structure and accountability.
A good coach recognizes those differences and adjusts the training accordingly.
The workout should fit the person, not the other way around.
Sometimes that means modifying an exercise. Sometimes it means challenging someone to do a little more than they thought they could.
Knowing the difference is one of the most valuable parts of coaching.
Progress Comes From Paying Attention
One of the biggest misconceptions about coaching is that results come from working harder.
More often than not, they come from doing the little things well.
A better setup.
A stronger brace.
A small adjustment to your foot position.
Slowing down a movement to improve control.
Those details may seem small, but they add up over time.
They’re also the things that are easy to miss when you’re training on your own.
A Great Coach Has a Plan
Every session should build on the last one.
There should be a reason you’re doing each exercise and a clear direction for where your training is going next.
At Oakton Strength Systems, every member begins with our Foundations On Ramp before progressing through our 4 Strength Systems.
Whether someone chooses personal training or small group training, the coaching philosophy stays the same.
Teach first.
Build confidence.
Progress with purpose.
The Goal Is to Help You Become More Confident
One of my favorite parts of coaching is watching someone realize they can do something they didn’t think they could.
Not because we made the workout harder.
Because they learned a new skill, improved their technique, and became more confident in their abilities.
That’s what good coaching should do.
It should leave you feeling like you’re learning something every time you walk through the door.
